<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Can one ever have too much in sewing paraphernalia? Is is wrong to want to try out another product or even better <span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>WIN</b></span> products, fabrics or patterns? I think not. I am fortunate to have acquired the <span style="color: blue;"><b><span style="color: black;">Turbo Teal</span> </b></span><i>New Home Janome Sewing Machine</i>.</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 1.538em;"></span></span></span><b><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 1.538em;"> </span></span></span></b><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 1.538em;"> It is a basic machine with 10 stitch capabilities and a reverse lever. It's a lightweight 5lb machine. It arrived in an inspirational box.</span></span></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">This was a test run on the stitches this machine can sew.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Later while I was straightening my studio, I found a "fabric test". I had fused fabrics and batting onto black stabilizer to practice stitches and audition thread colors. It was for a landscape quilt which is part of this challenge. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Omitting the white on grey stitching (landscape practice), I was able to maneuver the fabric piece. Then tried adding a binding technique and used the reverse lever to create this.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Wash-away stabilizer was not the best idea, next time I'll use a firm permanent type. I like the loft the 12 wt wool thread creates, but changed to a 40wt Rayon thread towards the "eyes" portion of the stitch-out due to machine jams. The stitches tore the Kraft-tex in different areas possibly due to the 12wt thread and the wrong stabilizer. It was noticeable to me, so I fused a pocket size fabric swatch on the back and touched it up with a black fabric marker on front. </span></span></div>

<b><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Solids in a Bag</span></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> I'm trying to thin out my fabrics and use up what I accumulated and kept all these years. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I've gathered fabrics from my stash of solids.</span> </span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">I have kept my solids and other fabric prints in this type of storage totes for years.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">I store mostly 1/4 yard and
fat quarter pieces. Some of the zippers on these totes are tired. I have a paper clip as a pull tab on one tote. But the
containers are easy to stack, store AND still useable. They also are easy to pull out and look through. My 2014 resolution will be to
create a useful storage system in the closet.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">For this project, I cut 28 colors into <u><b>2" strips</b></u> then put them in the paper bag (recycled from a local quilt shop)</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">and began sewing together whatever color I pulled out.</span></div>

Every year I go a day early and every time I'm welcomed to shop at sale prices. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">I did acquire several rolls of various stabilizers for my machine embroidery work at the price of $2.00 each (who can resist) but now, how to store them? Guess I'll have to sew something up!</span><br />

The length was pieced till most of the fabric was used up, close to 54". <div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Sometimes as much as we try, we just can't get that ab<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">andoned</span> cat to trust us. <span style="font-size: large;">The cat has been living outdoors now <span style="font-size: large;">since Summer of 2012. The next door neighbors moved <span style="font-size: large;">away,<span style="font-size: large;"> leaving the cat to fend for itse<span style="font-size: large;">lf<span style="font-size: large;"> with no water nor food.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">I was so upset about <span style="font-size: large;">the abandonment<span style="font-size: large;">, I wrote a note and put it on all the subdivisions po<span style="font-size: large;">st boxes asking if they see the cat to please try and help it.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">For <span style="font-size: large;">a while I<span style="font-size: large;"> continued to set out various food<span style="font-size: large;">s <span style="font-size: large;">and water</span> <span style="font-size: large;">at the empty <span style="font-size: large;">house<span style="font-size: large;"> hoping he would come up to eat or drink. <span style="font-size: large;">The cat never di<span style="font-size: large;">d. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: x-large;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">I confess I go there to shop. I go to that "Chain Fabric Store". The one that has prints made exclusively for them. Their 40% off coupons, the Daffodil Days, the Black Friday Early Bird Specials. But not one of their specials could beat the deals I now have in my sewing room. The one and only fabric chain store here is being SUPER sized. It's being relocate to an empty Circut City store front. Good news for me, 'cause the location will be closer and offer more products. (hopefully not all made in China) This move is taking place the first week of April.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"> Friends have told me that currently, the store was pretty empty. I had hesitated to spend any shopping time there....but I'm working on a Philanthropic child size quilt and wanted backing fabric to finish the project.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Walked in yesterday, and saw that the fabric remaining was 50% off not bad but I wanted fabrics with ducks or a specific shade of blue. No fat chance. So, I left buying only black elastic thread, (for what I don't know but now I have it). Did some over night rethinking.......... I returned this morning to the store to settle for something and get this project DONE.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Could I settle?? ah ya - the cost to buy end of bolt fabrics would be 75% off! Looks at all theses fun fabrics and these are not "first run".</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">Just
what does one do with all those fabric scraps, you know the ones that
gets tossed over the shoulder of a quilting star or quietly slips under
the work surface? I have started to save them bitty pieces for pet
animal beds, as stuffing. I have made several and will continue to do
so. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCLcwjppJKBrUNc8AqwMTiATksm-7DBrhv_8rSXwhwb5vMmq1Cx7V7lSNUFP473ns9hrDlykjkr9SZJjS_QU2bkkOV_7p1MnqmmXEf7MiXCU2i2llkW_30bk1zOYcUZdoRsEuIki_5vT-B/s1600/waterwheelquilttop+025.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCLcwjppJKBrUNc8AqwMTiATksm-7DBrhv_8rSXwhwb5vMmq1Cx7V7lSNUFP473ns9hrDlykjkr9SZJjS_QU2bkkOV_7p1MnqmmXEf7MiXCU2i2llkW_30bk1zOYcUZdoRsEuIki_5vT-B/s1600/waterwheelquilttop+025.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </span></span>Here's Bagheera resting on 6 Upholstery Samples cut, rearranged. and sewn to a fleece back.<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">I have since learned to make an ugly fabric pillow insert and the cover separately, that way the outer sham can be washed.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">But enough of that ongoing project....</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">I have "collected" these fabric bits in a trash bag, tubs and even a laundry basket. <span style="font-size: x-large;">H</span>ow boring is that? Pretty boring to me! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">I "StumbleUpon" this tutorial by <i><u><b>ikat bag: Hamper </b></u></i>dated <b><i><u>2/25/2012</u></i></b>. (since this is only my 4th blog entry, link up is NOT a know how for me) ....yet <a href="http://www.ikatbag.com/">http://www.ikatbag.com/</a></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">I had been given this focal fabric in pieces and many more fabrics long ago by <span style="font-size: x-large;">a relation to</span> a genuine hoarder that never sewed. She gave me fabric flats that still have JCPenney tags on them for $2-$3. Do you remember fabric shopping there? I do, at the store we frequented, fabric was located in the basement of the store (Bakersfield CA</span><span style="font-size: x-large;">) </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">I suspect this fabric is from the 60's...so <span style="color: magenta;">Mod</span>....</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31O0rgp2qfrMAgJPTGCK9dX01ptQa38fw4vo_ssyx-ev1BF6VfhiSZMgd4RukTr6-4cSVJt8IhcQmeT3C0ZIHTg5Krp5kkISSTc6brLKPBanRiuGYz5S6slna4O0zrbXMLfAjOGUGw90N/s1600/springbutterfly+&+hamper+005.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31O0rgp2qfrMAgJPTGCK9dX01ptQa38fw4vo_ssyx-ev1BF6VfhiSZMgd4RukTr6-4cSVJt8IhcQmeT3C0ZIHTg5Krp5kkISSTc6brLKPBanRiuGYz5S6slna4O0zrbXMLfAjOGUGw90N/s1600/springbutterfly+&+hamper+005.JPG" width="427" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">My hubby made the frame for me, it just needs sanding and staining. A portion of the fabric faded during the vinegar rinse but hey, it's old fabric and JUST a scrap hamper for my sewing room. The measurements for this tutorial were spot on and we had no pattern problems. I serged the finished edges and since this fabric was almost a canvas type no need to line it - </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;"> 'cause it's JUST a hamper.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;">Now</span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: x-large;"> it's ready to catch those scraps being tossed by this non-celebrity and it adds a little neatness to my sewing space.</span> </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Sometimes for me, taking up<span style="font-size: large;"> sewing challenges can be lots of fun, or stressful or annoying. <span style="font-size: large;">T</span>ime, fabric<span style="font-size: large;"> or lack of <span style="font-size: large;">an idea <span style="font-size: large;"> can hinder the </span></span></span><span style="font-size: large;">whole process of taking the challenge in the first place. A few years ago, I was curious and had to look up the <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">definition</span> of a "paint chip challenge"<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-size: large;">after</span></span> reading it <span style="font-size: large;">on some internet quilt site</span></span>. The<span style="font-size: large;"> </span>local quilting guild,<span style="font-size: large;"> <i><span style="font-size: large;">Quilter's Sew-Ciety of Redding<span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span></i><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">does a yearly challenge and this is the 2013 theme. Any guild member who wanted to take up the challenge was to pick an envelope out of the basket <span style="font-size: large;">and creat<span style="font-size: large;">e a small <span style="font-size: large;">wall quilt within <span style="font-size: large;">specific dimensions and the 3 col<span style="font-size: large;">ors. I think I was lucky to have picked that envelope</span>. Many of the other ladies picked some <span style="font-size: large;">"</span><b>ummm</b>" unusual color combinations. The colors I pick<span style="font-size: large;">ed s<span style="font-size: large;">poke "flowers" to me. <span style="font-size: large;">I wanted to do more than just a applique flower quilt<span style="font-size: large;"> or pieced blocks.<span style="font-size: large;"> I<span style="font-size: large;">'m happy with the end results. <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span>Here are the</span> 3 paint chip colors: </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">"<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Water Wheel" is my latest sewn top. December 2012, I won 10 of these dollar blocks at the Redding Quilter's Sew-Ciety Guild meeting. I was given the leftover fabrics and actually was able to sew out 6 more blocks. If you look closely you will see 5 blocks sewn "incorrectly" by others (or maybe even me). After careful consideration, I decided to keep them all as they were sewn. Isn't that what friends are for? Besides, the Quilt Police aren't patrolling. </span></span>kbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03693067431220068109noreply@blogger.com0
